Alice Macdonald July 2022

Your parliamentary candidate for Norwich North is Alice Macdonald.

Alice grew up in Norfolk, attending comprehensive school in Downham Market. Her family have lived in Norfolk for decades; her mum Irene was leader of West Norfolk Council, and her dad worked as a solicitor with Trade Unions. Alice was elected as Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate for Norwich North in 2022.  She lives near Sewell Park.

Alice has a long track record of fighting against poverty, inequality and climate change at all levels. She’s served as a Labour Councillor, and with Harriet Harman MP to champion women’s rights. She is known for being a passionate and hardworking defender of public services, with a track record of standing-up to Conservative cuts.

Alice is not a career politician; she has spent  most of her working life in the voluntary and charitable sector. She currently works as Global Campaigns and Policy Director for a not-for-profit organisation that tackles poverty, inequality and climate change where she works closely with the United Nations. Previously she worked for Save the Children where she led international campaigns and secured change for vulnerable children.

She is a strong believer in community action and wherever she’s lived she’s always got involved in local causes. She’s been a school governor and a Hospital Trust governor. During the pandemic she volunteered at a local food bank and delivered parcels to the elderly.

Restoring Trust

Alice understands that there is a lot of cynicism about politics and that people can think ‘they are all the same.’ She knows it’s on her to show people she is on their side. After 12 years of Conservative neglect Alice thinks the priority is restoring our public services and tackling the cost of living crisis. During her first 100 days as Labour Party Candidate she raised the profile of the lack of affordable childcare, campaigned for better mental health services, spoken to young people and, together with Wes Streeting, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care launched a campaign for shorter GP and dentist waiting times. She’s also met and spoken to hundreds of people across Norwich North and will continue to do so.

Supporting Business

Alice thinks we need an economy that works for working people. She continues to meet with business representatives across the region and has listened to concerns about infrastructure, recruitment, retaining talent in the city and securing investment. Alice wants Norwich to be a city where people can make a good life for themselves and their family, where there are quality jobs and affordable housing.  The current dire economic situation is a Tory crisis made in Downing Street and paid for by working people up and down the country.  Alice is campaigning for economic stability with Labour, strong fiscal rules and fair, long-term growth based on a real plan to create new, good quality jobs.

A fairer, greener future

Alice is passionate about the environment and has spent much of her career working in sustainable development. She is clear that we must transition away from fossil fuels. She believes Labour’s positive vision for a new publicly owned GB Energy company makes good sense for the economy and the environment. Labour’s positive vision for 100% clean energy by 2030 could be a gamechanger for counties such as Norfolk, creating good quality jobs and long term investment.  Alice will work to make sure Norwich North benefits from investment in green jobs.

Alice is keen to meet with as many local residents, businesses and community groups as possible. Follow her campaign, get in touch and find out what a difference a Labour Government could make.
