Cllr Alan Waters reacts to yesterdays ‘roadmap’ announcement
Reacting to yesterday’s announcement from the government on a roadmap to ease Covid-19 lockdown restrictions Cllr Alan Waters, Labour’s leader of Norwich City Council, says:
“As with the rest of the country, I welcome the details of yesterday’s roadmap to pave the way ahead for the easing of lockdown.
But what I really want to see is clarity on particular elements in next week’s budget from the chancellor. That means getting some assurances on the extension of furlough; proper support for the self-employed and others who have fallen through the cracks of government support; commitment to keeping the Universal Credit uplift and a reduction in the current five-week wait; a long-term employment strategy and more financial support for those who need to self-isolate.
All of these elements demonstrate, beyond doubt, how integral local government continues to be in delivering the roadmap and responding to the many aspects of the pandemic well beyond the summer months.
One thing is crystal clear in all of this – the coming weeks and months represent a pivotal time in the fight against Covid and we desperately need government to recognise and respond to the additional resources needed by local councils to tackle it.”
