NHS staff deserve a real pay rise

For the past year, NHS key workers have put their lives at risk to protect us all. The thanks they are getting from Rishi Sunak, Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson is a one percent pay rise – which is, in fact, a real terms pay cut. This equates to just £3.50 a week for an experienced nurse.

Our NHS workers have given so much for us. It’s our turn to give back. They deserve it.

Labour has called on Matt Hancock to explain why the Government is breaking its promise to reward health care workers for their efforts throughout the pandemic.

On multiple occasions Matt Hancock has publicly declared NHS staff should receive the pay they deserve, regularly describing healthcare workers as “heroes”. Now he needs to live up to this promise.

Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, said:

“These promises to nurses now lie in tatters. Boris Johnson is cutting nurses’ pay. As night follows day, you simply can’t trust the Tories with the NHS.”

Clive Lewis, Labour MP for Norwich South, said:

“This Tory Government has spent £37 billion on a failed track and trace system, yet won’t give our NHS staff a real pay rise. This paltry 1% is only a few pounds a week: not even enough to cover parking charges for one shift.”
