Jo Smith
Norwich City Council candidate for Mancroft
Previously a City Councillor in Mancroft, I have lived and worked in the area for over twenty years and am passionate about making the city a great place for residents. This includes fighting hard to make sure new developments enhance the city and improve quality of life. Particularly, I have spoken up at every opportunity against the Anglia Square development as there is no reason why we can’t make our quarter of the city beautiful as well as affordable, and I will continue to fight for the best possible development there.
The high degree of poverty in the area means that I am busy working with the foodbanks to ensure everyone has enough to eat. With Labour councillors and activists I have spent lockdown delivering food to those who have suffered a lack of income. I am a single mum and for many years lived on a low income topped up with benefits, and I’m not ashamed to say that my children were on free school meals. Mancroft ward has high levels of deprivation and I’m keen to work with the council on their strategies to support our poorest residents. I am a keen supporter of the council’s plans to provide new housing developments to provide the greenest housing possible for our residents. Anti social behaviour , littering and noise nuisance are also issues that affect us city dwellers and I will always work with the police to help reduce these.
I’m proud to live in a city where the council prioritises environmental issues which reflect my own concerns over climate change as well as local issues such as the building of the Western Link road which I will physically protest against if needs be. I am a member of the LGBT+ community , a keen supporter of women’s rights and love living in our tolerant, kind and beautiful city.
